Queenstown police want information about an incident that occurred in Fernhill Rd on Sunday night.
Constable Craig Gibson said a driver lost control of a vehicle which hit a concrete slab beside the street and went up a bank.
It hit fence posts and a traffic sign, causing damage.
"The vehicle travelled back down the bank and on to the road," he said.
It had then turned and "made off" towards Wynard Cres.
The vehicle was either a dark grey or green hatchback, with black trim at the rear of one side, he said.
The incident was reported at 9.25pm on Sunday by witnesses who said the car "sounded like a high-performance vehicle".
