Hay House pupils were the popular winners of the Manaia trophy at Wakatipu High School's annual inter-house haka and waiata competition on Thursday.

Duncan House was second in the tournament in which more than 370 pupils, about half the school population, participated and displayed ''courage, spirit and mana'', the audience heard.

The competition was judged by Hine Marchand, Peter Waaka, Shaun Vining and Grant Adolph.

It was performed in front of hundreds of spectators in the school stadium, including parents and caregivers and kapa haka groups from

Queenstown Primary School and Mount Aspiring College, Wanaka.
