Wanaka holiday-makers basked in sunny conditions yesterday, with many heading to the lake to swim, sail, kayak, boat or sunbathe.

The temperature had reached 24degC in the Otago Daily Times' Brownston St office backyard by 4pm, with just a light southerly breeze.

A safe swimming area has been opened up at the southwest end of Roys Bay, where powered craft are excluded.

The shops were busy yesterday and on Saturday and holiday traffic is beginning to flow into town.

Many more holiday-makers are expected to arrive this week in the lead-up to New Year's Eve.
