A male sustained a serious head injury in a 2.5m fall from an embankment by Lake Esplanade in Queenstown late this morning.

St John Queenstown station manager Keith Raymond said the man was being treated at Lakes District Hospital in Frankton for a "significant'' head injury.

He would be flown to Dunedin Hospital this afternoon.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said the incident occurred near the intersection of Lake Esplanade and Brunswick St.
