Nine months after it opened its doors, Alpine Health and Fitness at the Queenstown Events Centre has notched up its 1000 member.

Aspen Lodge Backpackers receptionist Victoria Reid signed up for a six-month membership on July 3.

Originally from Australia, Ms Reid has been living in Queenstown for two years and while she occasionally swam, she had never ventured into a gym before.

"The first class in my life was a Les Mills Body Pump class at Alpine Health and Fitness, but I have pretty much tried all the classes, go to yoga regularly and am getting very excited about jumping in the pool for the new AquaGroove."

Alpine Health and Fitness manager Richie Heap said for a large number of members, this was their first regular gym attendance, and many had joined because of the options membership gave them at a very reasonable price.

"We surveyed our members recently and discovered 53% had not been regular gym-goers previously, so of course we were thrilled that we can provide the community with a facility that is welcoming and gets those people who never would have previously considered going to the gym up and moving.

"We have members aged from 12 to 92 years and when you see the fantastic Lindauer Ladies, who worked so hard for their catwalk debut at the winter festival, still here working out next to sports teams such as the Wakatipu league team and the rowing club, its really rewarding to know its a facility that suits everyone's needs."

The centre was a self-funded division of Lakes Leisure, receiving no financial support from ratepayers.

Ms Reid was given an extra month on her membership and a free personal training session to congratulate her and make sure she got the most from her workouts.
