Riders and their mounts from as far as Rangiora, in North Canterbury, leapt over fences, galloped across the countryside, and strove for ultimate harmony between horse and rider at the fifth annual event on the new course on the corner Speargrass Flat and Hunter Rds, between Queenstown and Arrowtown.
The Wakatipu Pony Club's new president, Nicky Catterick, took the reins for this year's event, as former head coach and event convener Jan Hunt stepped down from the position after four years of service.
"We've had over 100 entries, and a good host of local riders have turned out. The weather is brilliant, and there is a good standard of competition," Mrs Catterick said.
During the all-day event 104 riders competed over six grades, from pony club introductory to two-star intermediate, in three separate disciplines - dressage, showjumping and cross-country.
Mrs Catterick said the total number of entrants was slightly lower than last year, but reasoned some of last year's competitors had now reached an ability where they could compete in bigger events in the North Island.
"It's a good thing, really, because we helped them get to that level of ability. We're just happy the weather is perfect for today and a good number of people have turned up to show their support.
"It's important to say we're only a small club, but we're dedicated and we always attract large numbers at competitions," she said.
