A grass fire near Tarras appears to have been stopped at the Lindis River.
Six families in caravans on the other side of the river, who were preparing to leave, are staying put but three caravans remain hooked up to their cars as a precaution.
A Fire Communications spokesman said appliances from Luggate, Cromwell, Dunstan and Tarras attended the scene.
