Glenorchy School pupils are the first in the Wakatipu to take up the Fonterra Milk for Schools offer and the children cannot get enough of the free white stuff.
All 28 pupils started the school's trial run of the scheme last week, with the support of parents. Children run from classrooms at morning break for their 180ml boxes of UHT long-life milk, straight from the supplied refrigerator.
Principal Esther Hamilton said the daily milk round gave the growing children the benefits of nutrition and calcium. Teachers were glad to know pupils had something in their bellies halfway between breakfast and lunchtime.
The traditional milk monitor role was about to return, which taught pupils responsibility, and recycling the boxes tied in with their Enviroschools focus, Mrs Hamilton said.
''We thought it was a very good opportunity to be able to give them the option and I like the fact there's no pressure on them. They decide whether they like it one day, or the day after,'' she said.
Primary school principals can express interest in the scheme via the Fonterra Milk for Schools website.
