Give way explained

Queenstown has its fair share of overseas drivers adjusting to New Zealand road rules so the Queenstown Times thought it may be a good time to explain the new give-way changes to be introduced next weekend.

From March 25, every driver will need to understand two new give-way rules introduced by the New Zealand Transport Agency.

Here are the two new things you must know:(1) Vehicles turning right must give way to those turning left coming from the opposite direction. This rule applies at cross-roads, T-intersections and driveways where both vehicles are facing each other with no signs or signals, or with the same signals.

(2) At an uncontrolled T-intersection (no signals), all traffic from the terminating road must give way to all traffic on a continuing road.

This new rule acts as though a stop sign or give-way sign is at the head of the terminating road.

It will also apply to uncontrolled driveways such as the supermarket or hospital. All vehicles entering or exiting a driveway must continue to give way to pedestrians or cyclists on a footpath.
