`Gifted' re-imagines NZ literary royalty

The Fortune Theatre presents Gifted, playwright Patrick Evans' imagined relationship between two of New Zealand's greatest writers, Janet Frame and Frank Sargeson, in the Queenstown Memorial Centre on Saturday.

The idyllic world of the literary ''Father of the Nation'' is about to shatter when not only does Janet come to stay - with her riddling speech and baffling behaviour - but Harry appears to form what is described as a ''funny, clever and often very moving literary love triangle''.

Central Otago actor Andrew Laing plays Sargeson, Dunedin actor Simon O'Connor plays his partner Harry Doyle, and Sophie Hambleton plays Frame.

Gifted is directed by Conrad Newport from the script by Evans, tutor of New Zealand literature at the University of Canterbury since 1978.

Queenstown is the second of seven dates around Otago and Southland, with Wanaka, Cromwell, Alexandra and Oamaru to follow.

Tickets for Gifted in Queenstown cost $15-$40, plus booking fee, from Ticketek. The show begins at 7.30pm.
