Frequent rock slips prompt Crown Range warning

Road work crews spent all day yesterday clearing rock slips from the Crown Range Rd caused by heavy rain.

Downer EDI area supervisor Michael Scott said motorists should be aware rock slips were occurring frequently and to take "extreme care" when travelling the mountain pass between Wanaka and Queenstown.

"It snowed on and off throughout the day. Some [rocks] have been relatively small, others have been as big as wheelbarrows," Mr Scott said.

To Mr Scott's knowledge no accidents had occurred. The police have not reported any road accidents.

The main trouble spots were at bridge 2 on the Wanaka side of the pass, and about 400m below the summit on the Wanaka side.

On the Queenstown side, rock falls were occurring between chain bay 4 (near the lookout part way down the mountain) and the Eastbourne gate.
