At least 400 people were affected by disruptions to flights to and from Queenstown Airport because of low cloud this week.
On Wednesday and yesterday, the airport was closed to all aircraft not fitted with required navigational performance (RNP) equipment.
Air New Zealand Queenstown Airport manager Dave Whitaker said while its larger Boeing jets were fitted with RNP, two of its smaller turboprop aircraft operating from Christchurch to Queenstown had to be diverted to Invercargill on Wednesday. One flight was diverted yesterday. He said about 150 people were affected and had to be bused from Invercargill to Queenstown.
All the Auckland flights were running because those aircraft were fitted with RNP, he said.
Jetstar spokeswoman Andrea Wait said none of its planes were fitted with RNP yet.
"Queenstown has challenging conditions. That's the reason why we are fitting RNP. We are in the final stages and it will be fully implemented next month, in time for winter," she said.
Two Jetstar flights were diverted on Wednesday. Yesterday, one from Auckland landed at Christchurch and one from Christchurch flew to Dunedin. About 260 passengers were bused to Queenstown.
