Lachlan Newham caught three trout while on a fishing charter with his father on the Queenstown-based Blue Lagoon.
He wrestled with the big one for 15 minutes at the Kawarau River outlet.
Lachlan said the fish jumped out of the water a few times but he took it nice and slowly and managed to get it into the boat.
He would be taking the fish home stuffed and mounted and would hang it on the wall at his Castle Hill, Sydney, home.
Blue Lagoon skipper Louie Adamson said anglers tried their whole lives to land a fish like Lachlan's.
"He did very well and was very lucky. He'll probably try all his life to get another one like this," he said.
