Fire near Queenstown under control

Firefighters have brought a blaze at Jacks Point, near Queenstown, under control.

The fire broke out just before noon, and raged on a gorse-covered hill between the Jacks Point clubhouse and Lake Wakatipu.

It was fanned by strong winds and was travelling in a southerly direction towards Kingston.

Monsoon buckets, filled from Lake Tewa by the Jacks Point clubhouse, are still dumping water on the site but the worst appears to be over.

It is believed the fire might have been started by a lawn mower.

Jacks Point is a 1200ha settlement on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, comprising an 18-hole golf course, club house and a residential development.
