Fire investigation

The Department of Conservation hopes to complete an investigation into a large fire in the Craig Burn Reserve, near Lake Hawea, by the end of this month.

Wanaka area manager Paul Hellebrekers said investigations were well under way and a fire debriefing was planned early next month.

"We are still working through the last of the costs so don't have a final total yet." The September 23 fire was caused by an escaped rural burn on Glen Dene Station, and destroyed about 30ha of regenerating native beech forest at the entrance to the Matatiaho Conservation Area near Lake Hawea.
