Fire callouts spur advice

Callouts for the Fire Service in Queenstown yesterday prompted a fire safety warning and a reminder to building contractors to beware of setting off fire alarms.

At 6pm the fire station received a call about a house fire at Dublin St.

Chief Fire Officer Bob Robertson said it turned out to be a chimney fire which had not spread to the rest of the house.

"This should be a timely reminder to keep the chimneys clean."

Earlier in the day, the station was alerted to what turned out to be a false alarm at the ANZ Bank in Beach St.

The alarm was set off by a contractor using a gas torch close to the smoke detector.

Mr Ide said this kind of false alarm was easily avoided by calling the alarm provider.

An avoidable false alarm can result in a charge to the building owner of $1125.
