Festival liquor ban will run for five days

Central Queenstown will be under a liquor ban for the first five days of the Winter Festival, Queenstown Lakes District councillors resolved unanimously this week.

The ban, from 6am on Friday, June 26, until 6am on Wednesday, July 1, covers all events, including the opening night party and Mardi Gras.

It will be imposed on Shotover St, Athol St, Ballarat St, Queenstown Mall, Camp St, Earl St, Church St, Searle Lane, Cow Lane, Rees St and Beach St to the end of the Steamer Wharf building.

The ban also includes the foreshore from Steamer Wharf to the end of Marine Pde.

People who breach the ban may be arrested and fined up to $20,000.

Winter Festival director Sally Feinerman, Queenstown police liquor licensing officer Sergeant Keith Newell and Public Health South health promotion adviser Ann Fowler all supported the ban.
