Spring was in the air at The Remarkables ski area with free family activities at the weekend.

The Remarkables Export 33 Spring Carnival started on Saturday with free tubing, face-painting, treasure hunts, lolly scrambles, balloon throw, a kids obstacle course and live music.

The Remarkables Ski Area Manager Ross Lawrence said the carnival was a great way for families to start the school holidays.

More than 1000 people turned out for the event, which included a pond skim on Saturday and a downhill dummy race yesterday, he said.

It will climax in a "gravity-defying, awe-inspiring" FMX display today involving some of Australia and New Zealand's top FMX riders.

Weather permitting, there will be four 20-minute displays, at 10.30am, 11.30am, 1pm and 3pm.
