John and Maggie Ennis came to Queenstown from Dunedin in 1993 when they bought the restaurant, which had been running since the mid '70s.
"Originally we thought we'd do it for three to five years, but we very quickly established a love for the business and lifestyle and continued on," Mrs Ennis said.
"A labour of love ... 18 years, but now, it's time to move on. It's been a fantastic journey in more ways than one for our whole family.
"We have met and maintained contact with numerous members of our staff, a multinational crew. We also have ties with people who have been visiting Queenstown for years and when in town come and see us. They recommend 'the Beef' to their friends."
Mrs Ennis reeled off some well-known faces that had dined in the establishment, from the "late, great Sir Peter Blake to James O'Donnell of Vertical Limit fame, the Tamaki brothers, Justin Marshall - heaps of rugby boys and lots of overseas players - Tim Shadbolt, Midge Marsden, and the list goes on ..."
Mrs Ennis said the couple's three daughters, Kelly, Jacqui and Lana, had been instrumental in the business.
"At some point they've all worked for us. All of them very capable - there has always been a strong sense of family in the fabric of the Beefeater. People from all walks of life have enjoyed the cosy ambience of our mediaeval-themed establishment. We've fed the multitudes and it has it been a pleasure ...
"We're sad to sell the Beefeater. It is unique and in a way it has been an extension of our home. Unfortunately the brand is not going to continue but we have to say, 36 years in Queenstown is a track record we are very pleased to have been a part of.
"For Johnnie and myself, we have a 'bucket list' and need to get cracking on ticking a few more of the boxes - grandchildren, travel and golf feature rather prominently.
"We love this environment and we look forward to other involvements in our community.
"Thank you to all you big steak lovers out there who have generously supported us, also to our suppliers and past and present staff members."
