Emergency benefits sought for skifield staff

The managers of the Snow Park ski and boarding field on the Pisa Range have contacted Work and Income New Zealand about emergency benefits for the field's 60 staff, who are still on standby after the scheduled opening on June 11 failed to happen because of lack of snow.

Snow Park general manager Robin Sadowski-Synnott said staff were being given daily updates and employee get-togethers were planned for this week to "keep that morale going".

She hoped snow-making could be carried out last night and tonight, but said no revised opening date had been scheduled.

Treble Cone marketing consultant Nigel Kerr said there had still been "no snowfall of any significance" on the mountain, but staff were able to carry out some snowmaking on Friday and Saturday. Treble Cone originally planned to open this week.

Cardrona field manager Gary Husband said there was only a "very light sprinkling" of snow on Saturday and snowmaking was still proving difficult.

"We're getting one night out of every two or three managing to make snow but ... the temperatures aren't very conducive to that either."

Staff at Cardrona would be informed mid-week whether the field would open on Friday as originally planned.
