Queenstown's Commonage Villas covered in snow earlier this year. The development at Queenstown Hill has won a 2008 Architecture Award for the Otago-Southland region, in the residential architecture multiple housing category.
A Queenstown development has won an award for being the "finest, most high quality and visibly stunning" of its kind in the 2008 Architecture Awards for the Otago-Southland region.

Commonage Villas earned the award in the residential architecture multiple housing category, judged by the New Zealand Institute of Architects and a panel of five judges.

The 14-villa development is crafted from natural materials and boasts international "alpine architecture" designed by Mason and Wales Architects, of Dunedin, which has a long-standing association with the region.

The villas are set on a prime "dress circle" location on Queenstown Hill and have been designed to fit the landscape.

All villas feature views over Lake Wakatipu and surrounding mountain ranges, with large living areas and interiors fitted out with New Zealand-made designer furnishings.

Marketing manager Jessica Trimming said the award was the "official stamp of approval" for the villas, which opened in October last year.

"Everyone who walks into one of the villas is simply blown away by the design and finish. They have that real 'wow' factor"Outside and in, guests recognise the quality of the design and build, the attention to detail and their international appeal."

The regional award puts Commonage Villas into contention for the New Zealand Institute of Architects national final.
