District awards loom

Nominations are now open for the 2010 Queenstown Lakes District Heart of the District Awards.

Queenstown Lakes District arts and events facilitator Jan Maxwell said the awards were a great opportunity to celebrate and pay tribute to groups and individuals who made a real difference in the community.

Established by the Queenstown Lakes District Council in 2002, the awards continue to gain momentum every year.

Ms Maxwell encouraged people from all sectors of the community to nominate someone for an award.

"It's a chance to acknowledge and thank people in the community, like volunteers, coaches and young people.

"We want names because there are amazing people out there doing the same thing for years and we don't necessarily know about them and how they made a difference to how the community works," she said.

The Heart of the District Awards are in six categories: arts, landscape and urban design, youth, business, environmental and heritage, and social and cultural.

This year the awards ceremony will take place in Wanaka on May 27. They were held in Queenstown last year.

Nominations close on April 20. Nomination forms are available from council offices or can be downloaded from www.qldc.govt.nz.
