Dark end to working day

Business in Wanaka was thrown into disarray yesterday afternoon during a power outage of about 75 minutes.

Delta spokesman Graeme Johnson, of Cromwell, said the power cut was probably caused at the Wanaka substation on Ballantyne Rd, but he was still investigating yesterday.

He said it was most likely a coincidence contractors had just ascended a power pole on the corner of Dungarvon and Brownston Sts to work on overhead cables when the power went down about 3.15pm.

It was also coincidence that power outages occurred yesterday in Ettrick and the Lake Hayes area, Mr Johnson said.

"They were all totally unrelated ... which happens from time to time. The outage in Ettrick was caused by a car hitting a power pole, just before 6pm. There was a relatively small area, of about 50 customers, affected north of Ettrick."

In Wanaka, several businesses closed early.
