The Queenstown-based musician and children's author asked his fans to contribute $15,000 to the design, printing and distribution costs of his book and CD Eating, after his publisher turned down his idea to make his most popular song into a book.
Smith reached his crowdfunding target with a day to spare.
He thanked everyone who donated funds and said he was now sold on crowdfunding because of the ''total creative licence'' it afforded him.
''It's also humbling because you've got all these people who believe in your work, and are donating their hard-earned money before they've seen the book.''
Yesterday, Smith left for a three-week trip to the United Kingdom, where he will perform at the four-day Glastonbury music festival and do promotional work.
