Crash hits early traffic

Morning rush-hour traffic was reduced to a crawl, and sometimes a standstill, in Frankton Rd yesterday while Queenstown and Frankton emergency services dealt with a collision between two vehicles on the main artery of the resort.

Sergeant Mark Gill, of Queenstown, said it appeared sun strike was the cause of a nose-to-tail collision between an outbound red Mazda utility vehicle and a green Subaru station wagon in front of it at about 8.30am.

Both cars had no passengers and the drivers, both Queenstown men, were not injured.

Traffic backed up for several kilometres for about 10 minutes along Frankton Rd while police took statements, recovery trucks operated and firefighters swept debris from the road.

Inbound and outbound vehicles were directed by police through a single lane in turns.

Sgt Gill said alcohol was not a factor in the crash and charges were not laid.
