A Wanaka woman was extremely lucky to avoid serious injury when the vehicle she was driving rolled at Hawea Flat district, emergency service workers say.

The woman, understood to be in her late teens, was travelling along Kane Rd towards the Luggate Bridge shortly before 10am when the accident occurred, near the McKay Rd intersection.

Constable Heaeen Chung said Wanaka police were still investigating the cause of the crash but confirmed the driver was not intoxicated.

Tyre marks on the road at the crash scene indicated the Toyota Land Cruiser, owned by the woman's employer, went into the opposite lane before swerving back the other way and going several metres up a bank.

It had then flipped over but it was not clear how many times it rolled, Const Chung said.

After crashing into a large rock, the vehicle came to rest back on the road. The Luggate Volunteer Fire Brigade, Wanaka police and Wanaka St John attended the accident.

The woman was taken from the scene by ambulance and treated at Wanaka's medical centre for an injured hand and scrapes and bruises.

Both Luggate fire chief Rod Anderson and St John's Wanaka operation team manager Don McMillan described the driver as a ''very lucky girl'' considering the extensive damage to the vehicle.
