Coronet Peak season to end

Even though snow was predicted in the area last night and the rest of the week will be a return to more wintry conditions, Coronet Peak Ski Area will close on Sunday.

In true Coronet Peak style, it will close with its inaugural International Day party, NZSki Ltd chief executive officer James Coddington said.

Coronet Peak ski area manager Hamish McCrostie said it had been a big season after the redevelopment of the base building and ski area over the past 12 months.

The new base building had made a massive difference to mountain operations and customer service, with Mr Coddington saying Coronet Peak had a record season "largely due to the efficiencies of the new developments".

The season is far from over for the four other skifields in the area.

The Remarkables ski area manager Ross Lawrence said there should be plenty of snow to see the field through to its projected closing date of October 12.

"We've had little in the way of rain . . . and expect a bit [more snow] through the next 24 hours," Mr Lawrence said last night.

Cardrona field manager Gary Husband said they also expected to remain operational until October 12, especially with cooler weather forecast for the rest of the week.

While the weather had warmed up, he said there was between 70-80cm of snow on the trails.

Snow Park general manager Sam Lee said there were definitely signs that spring was in the air with softer "spring condition snow" on the tracks.

But some snow had fallen over the past day and snow-making conditions were good.

"We will be on track to be open until the scheduled closing date of Saturday, October 4," he said.

That is also the planned closing date for Treble Cone.

The higher Saddle Basin received 10cm of snow yesterday though there were more "spring-like" conditions in the Home Basin, Treble Cone manger Jackie van der Voort said.
