Contractors commended for their grit

The Queenstown Lakes District Council is pleased with how roading contractors have responded to the two unusually large snowfalls over the past month.

Speaking at yesterday's infrastructure services committee meeting, council transport manager Denis Mander said he was happy with the gritting and grading response to the unusual "one-off events".

"The contractors have performed very well," Mr Mander said, adding that some areas for improvement had been identified in discussions with the contractors.

"There were some concerns with the first week in terms of stamina and being able to keep on going."

Despite the clearing of footpaths being a "relatively low priority", Mr Mander said the council had been more proactive the second time round with employing contractors to do the job, as well as gritting pedestrian routes through town.

Arrowtown-based councillor Lex Perkins said as far as he was concerned, "they have done very well out there, with the main roads gritted and cleared".

He also commended firefighters, who were out clearing snow off footpaths.

Committee chairman Lyal Cocks described twitter, email and radio information updates as "invaluable".

However, Cr Trevor Tattersfield was concerned for those without computer access.

He mentioned the "pretty casual" nature of certain radio stations in delivering road reports, and called for "properly worded descriptive phrases to describe the conditions".
