This weekend, residents of Frye Cres, where Charlie's family live, are holding the Frye Crescent Fundraising Fiesta so his older sister Emily (4) can travel to Christchurch with her father, Rick Woodward, to visit Charlie and his mother, Keighley Redshaw, at Ronald McDonald House.
Next weekend, the Albert Town Tavern's annual motor-bike and classic car run will serve as another fundraiser for Charlie's family.
Charlie has already had successful surgery at Starship Children's Hospital in Auckland to remove the tumour and started an extensive chemotherapy programme in Christchurch last week.
He and his mother will live in Christchurch for several months.
Family friend Jessica Townshend said yesterday she visited the family in Christchurch last weekend and they were still a little "shaky".
Neighbour Rae Paterson said neighbours were helping care for Emily while Mr Woodward was at work.
It was a vulnerable time for the family because everything had happened so quickly and Charlie and Emily's parents were still working out what they needed to do, she said.
Some funding is available to fly Mr Woodward to Christchurch once a fortnight, and any extra funds raised would go towards the costs of Emily's flights to Christchurch.
Extra funds could also go towards some of the other costs likely to be incurred by the family and some funds would be donated to the recently-formed Upper Clutha Children's Specialist Medical Trust.
Ms Paterson said help was being provided by the trust and Bev Rudkin, who helped set it up with a group of volunteer cancer support workers last year.
• The Frye Cres Fundraising Fiesta will be held from numbers 1-12 Frye Crescent (the tavern end of the street).
• The Charlie Redwood fundraising classic car and motorbike run is on April 17 from noon and is open to bikes, soft-top cars and classic cars, with entry by donation at the tavern.
