The group behind a proposed multi-use Arrowtown community building is asking the community to decide on the best use for contested Arrowtown Camping Ground land - that or community housing?
A meeting was held to gauge interest in the estimated $2 million community and sports centre proposed for land next to Jack Reid Park once 18 cabins are removed over the next two years.
Including part of Jack Reid Park, the proposed Suffolk St centre would cater for community and sports groups.
However, the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust also has plans for the council-owned freehold land, as a site for six community housing units.
Arrowtown Community and Sports Centre Inc acting chairman Russell Gray yesterday said the future of the land should come down to what the community wants.
The sports centre body would set up a website to provide information and get feedback from the community, he said.
Community Housing Trust chairman David Cole agreed the community should have input on the issue but said that , ultimately, the council should make the decision.
The trust had, for a long time, been involved with the council in locating a housing site. The council had suggested the Suffolk St site, and initial plans had been drawn up, so the trust was surprised to learn of the community sport trust's proposals.
