Queenstown Lakes Mayor Clive Geddes accepted letters of goodwill for the Prostate Cancer Foundation fundraising Queenstown Auto Extravaganza, from foundation spokesman and former All Black captain Stu Wilson yesterday.

The letters of support for the cause and best wishes for the event were written by the mayors of Auckland, North Shore and Waitakere and delivered by volunteers driving three blue and white AC Cobra sports cars in convoy.

The open-topped cars had toured through rain and shine from Auckland since Tuesday. One was parked for the handover on Earnslaw Park and attracted plenty of attention from the public, who were given information about the event and the foundation.

The sealed envelopes were opened and the letters read by Mr Geddes at the end of the extravaganza's Jacks Point Car Cruise last night.

Mr Wilson said raising awareness of prostate cancer was important to him, as two of his friends had suffered from the disease but both had survived, thanks to early diagnosis.

"It's the macho Kiwi male attitude to thinking of yourself as invincible, but you never know. Three hundred drop off the radar ever year.

"It's curable, if you get it early on. Just get a blood test and if some doctor has to put on a rubber glove, it's two seconds and it's all over."

The drivers visited AC Cobra clubs along the way while collecting donations and raising awareness of prostate cancer.

The amount collected was yet to be counted but a cheque for the total sum raised by the three-day Auto Extravaganza will be presented to the foundation in Queenstown in April.
