Climber wins Oceania title

Wanaka sports climber Finn Fairbairn (11) made a clean sweep of the under-12 boys' titles at the Oceania Sports Climbing Championships in Rotorua last weekend.

Finn was disappointed to learn he had no competitors in his own category, so was put in the under-14 girls competition.

He beat all-comers in that grade on his way to collecting the Oceania title, the New Zealand National Championship title and the Oceania Speed Climbing title for his own age-group.

Fairbairn's mother, Fiona Fair-bairn, said her son had not trained for lead roping events, so could not compete in the under-14 boys event, as he would liked to have done.

The Oceania championships attract competitors from New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands.

The Oceania open titles were won by Australians Rob LeBreton (men) and Sam Berry (women).

The 2008 National Open Championships were won by Zac Orme (19) of Wellington and Sarah Gilmour (15) of Christchurch.
