Queenstown residents will have the chance to see some of the country's best dancers this month, when the Tower Tutus on Tour reaches the Memorial Hall.

It is performed by the Royal New Zealand Ballet and the company will give one show and hold a company class during its Queenstown stopover.

The performances are a mix of contemporary works and classical ballet presented by Lakes Leisure.

Events manager Karen Gemmell said it was a pleasure to have the ballet company in the resort, a company which was "so accommodating" in interacting with the local community.

"They love coming to the Southern Lakes and usually schedule two days off following the Queenstown event to relax and enjoy our local activities."

Ballet artistic director Gary Harris said the tour allowed the company the chance to bring "home-grown dance" to communities throughout the country, simultaneously celebrating the beginnings of the company.

The Royal New Zealand Ballet began in 1953 by touring small towns in New Zealand, when the communities would billet the dancers.

"We are looking forward, once again, to dancing on your doorstep," Mr Harris said.

The programme this year includes Christopher Hampson's acclaimed work, Saltarello, as well as the work that puts the tutu in the tour - Holberg Suite.

Former company dancer Andrew Simmons returns to present a new work entitled Through to You, and top Australian choreographer Garry Stewart joined the company for the first time with his highly charged work, Currently Under Investigation.

The show is on March 22.
