Christian school to integrate

Southern Lakes Christian School at Frankton will become a state-integrated school by the start of the next school year.

The school will be renamed KingsView School when the integration process is complete.

Application was first made to the Government to integrate the private school into the state education system in 2006.

Roland Lemaire-Sicre, board of trustees chairman, said that plans were being finalised for a new, larger school site in the Remarkables Park subdivision over the next two to three years.

The relocated school would operate at secondary level, with more than 500 pupils.

Mr Lemaire-Sicre said the rebranded school had been guaranteed government funding by the Minister of Education.

Until a new site was confirmed, the school had government permission to expand its roll to about 100 pupils, he said.

The school leases premises on Yewlett Cres, Frankton and has 26 pupils ranging from year 1 to year 8. Over the summer holidays, four new classrooms and an auditorium will be added to the site.

It is expected to open with 30 to 40 pupils in 2011.

Mr Lemaire-Sicre said when a private school integrated it received significantly more government funding while retaining a defined "special character" which distinguished it from other schools in the state system.

The school proprietor is the New Zealand Proprietors' Trust which operates a national network of special character state integrated schools across New Zealand.

A new board of trustees is being established and interest in recently advertised staff positions has been coming in from all around the country, Mr Lemaire-Sicre said.

Staff appointments are expected to be confirmed late next month.

A new prospectus and website are being developed and will contain enrolment information for prospective pupils and their parents. Attendance fees will be $1800 per annum.
