Upper Clutha's youth entrepreneurs will be given a helping hand by the Wanaka Chamber of Commerce and Mt Aspiring College, with the announcement this week of a five-year "Lion's Den" type scheme to launch new businesses.

The partnership was announced at the chamber's "Business After 6" monthly function.

An annual $1000 scholarship paid by the chamber to the college from 2011 to 2015 will enable the college to act as a bank for members of the school's youth enterprise scheme, providing important seed funding for fledgling initiatives.

Chamber of Commerce president Leigh Stock said the scheme should require pupils to apply to a panel of school and chamber representatives with an acceptable business proposal before obtaining a loan.

They would receive feedback before proceeding further.

"Students in the past have had to sausage sizzle outside New World to raise funds," Mr Stock said.

The pupils would be required to repay the loan, plus a small amount of interest, at the end of the year, which should help increase the nest egg.

"It is a way the chamber can work with young business people of the future. It is quite exciting for us," Mr Stock said.

Mt Aspiring College youth enterprise teacher Karen Rochford said yesterday the scheme would be well-received by pupils and parents alike.

"One of the limiting factors has been getting enough capital . . . This year's students have said one of the hardest things seems to be fundraising for the money.

"They seem to spend more time fundraising [than on their companies]," she said.

Applications would be called for in term one next year.

Mt Aspiring College principal Wayne Bosley said the scheme reinforced the school's goal of increasing its partnership with the community.

The scheme was exciting and had a nice symmetry to it, he said.
