Police are urging motorists to remain vigilant as wintry conditions persist following a weekend of vehicle crashes around Queenstown.
Sergeant Linda Stevens said the weekend was characterised by a spate of crashes, beginning with the driver of a car losing control on black ice and crashing into the Shotover Bridge on State Highway 6 at 4.10am on Friday. It was not known how many people were in the car. The driver was treated at Queenstown Lakes District Hospital for minor injuries.
Police are appealing for help from the public after a silver or white 4WD hit three parked cars on Fernhill Rd at 4.30am on Saturday.
Sgt Stevens said all three parked cars were damaged. The driver of the car which hit them got out and fled the scene after crashing.
The 4WD involved may be able to be identified by damage to the left front section of the bodywork, she said.
Police caught an alleged drunk driver who was breathalysed at 732mcg of alcohol per litre of breath after he crashed his Subaru vehicle into two parked cars on Panorama Rd at 7pm on Saturday. He was arrested and further charged with dangerous driving.
Later that evening, a vehicle lost traction on grit when the driver began braking on Fernhill Rd. Sgt Stevens said it then crashed down a bank. The driver managed to escape from the vehicle before it flipped on to its roof as it rolled down the hill.
It is not known whether there was any damage to property. Police are investigating and the man may face charges.
