Car-rental facility 'tourist asset'

A proposed car-rental facility for the Shotover Park development has been described as "providing another tourist asset" for Queenstown Lakes district.

Remarkables Park Ltd is seeking resource consent for a car-rental facility, workshop and car-valet service which, including the value of the land, will cost an estimated $3.5 million.

Remarkables Park chief executive Alastair Porter declined to name the rental agency, but said the facility would be owned by Remarkables Park and was a significant tourism investment for the company's planned retail centre and Queenstown.

" I have no doubt that it's justified. All of the rental-car operations are expanding as there is an increase in demand for rental cars. It's good for Queenstown - the ones who want rental cars are ... the independent travellers, who tend to stay longer and spend more."

The proposed site is located near the planned Shotover Park retail development, with dual frontage to Lucas Pl and Robertson St, and access to the Remarkables Park Town Centre is planned via the proposed eastern access road.

Mr Porter expected a decision would be made on the consent by early August, with construction to begin "immediately" if consent was granted.

Amalgamated Builders Ltd had been contracted for the works, and Mr Porter was confident that the attractive and "relatively straightforward" building could be completed before Christmas.

"The reason we are keen to get on with it is that we are getting approached by building and roading contractors looking for work ... So it's not only to get it done for the car-rental company, but also providing some work," Mr Porter said.

A 689sq m building for reception, facilities for up to 15 staff, management offices and administration areas, as well as a wash bay, detailing bay and vehicle workshop are proposed for the car-rental facility site.

The site is considered close enough to the airport for most customers to get there on foot or by bus or taxi.

Hours of operation for the site would vary depending on the season, but the customer-service area would be open every day from 8am to 6pm, and the vehicle-servicing hours would be 6am-10pm during peak times.

There would be 96 car parks for rental-vehicle storage and customer and staff parking, including two disabled parks.
