Camp St tops pedestrian count

Camp St, outside O'Connell's Shopping Centre, has again been found to host the highest number of pedestrians, according to a Colliers International annual pedestrian count.

The count was first undertaken in 2005 and Camp St has held the top spot continuously since then, although numbers at many other locations have shown increases, Steamers Wharf fivefold.

Overall foot traffic this year was the highest recorded count by volume, up 32% on 2011.

As noted in the official results, the survey is carried out over three half-hour periods at 10am, 3pm and 8pm on an annual date in March "to determine the volume of foot traffic throughout Queenstown's CBD".

The results noted that the most popular side of Rees St continued to be the BNZ side.

They attributed this to "the common pedestrian circuit" in which pedestrians started at Camp St and walked down either Upper Beech or The Mall which fed out to the northern side of Rees St.

The survey provided useful information to tenants and landlords.

Colliers International could not be reached for comment.
