A historical photograph archive of the Lake Hawea district is being collated by the Lake Hawea Community Association.

The project is being promoted by association member John Taylor, who is inviting people to have their old photographs scanned and put on to the digital database.

The project received a boost at the book launch of the Kane family and Lake Hawea history last Saturday when members brought along farming, dam construction and school photographs from the 1950s.

The function to celebrate From Coal and Gold to a Land of Milk and Honey, by Jackie Gurden, attracted up to 70 people.

Some of photographs already in the historical photograph collection were put on display.

"We are very keen to build the collection and make it available in the community centre and potentially in a pictorial book sometime in the near future," Mr Taylor said.

Many photos were lost when people moved from the area or died.

The collection helped retain the best images for everyone, he said.
