St Joseph's School year 8 school leaders Francesca O'Malley and Poppy Lake, with the aid of teacher Claire Harper, have made a submission on the Queenstown Lakes District Council's draft annual plan in the hope of getting two bus shelters worth $12,000 each.
The girls spoke at the submission hearing last week and urged councillors to consider funding the bus shelters.
In the written submission, the girls say they are grateful to the council's transport manager, Denis Mander, for the concrete square they have at present, but find they are ''unable to use it on many occasions'' and Mr Mander suggested they make a submission.
The region's often extreme weather means during summer ''the concrete heats up very quickly making it unbearably hot and some days impossible to sit on'' while during the winter months ''rain and snow are more likely and without the shelter the kids will get soaked and freeze''.
School board chairwoman Gigi Hollyer also made a submission asking for two standard-sized bus shelters.
Ms Hollyer acknowledged Mr Mander had facilitated a safe area on Hallenstein St where pupils could wait for the bus but requested two shelters be installed side by side there as this would benefit the health and safety of pupils and staff who caught buses.
