A burglar who was disturbed trying to steal property from a Fernhill address early yesterday assaulted one of the occupants of the home before fleeing.
Constable Daniel Andrew, of Queenstown, said yesterday the occupants of a Wynyard Cres property were woken by the male intruder about 2am.
The man was removing electrical equipment, "entertainment items" and alcohol from the house.
"One of the occupants confronted the intruder and a scuffle ensued during which the occupant received moderate injuries to his shoulder which required medical treatment at Lakes District Hospital," Const Andrew said.
After the scuffle the intruder fled down Wynyard Cres toward Fernhill Rd.
A blue scooter had also been taken from the address.
It was found a short time later by police near the intersection of Fernhill Rd and Cameron Pl.
Other items taken by the offender have been recovered.
The intruder was described as a male in his 20s.
He had dark skin and was "possibly Hispanic".
He was about 1.7m tall and of "skinny build", with short black hair.
He also had a "moustache with a gap in the middle", and was wearing a dark-coloured short-sleeved T-shirt and light-coloured jeans.
He spoke with an accent.
Anyone who knows the man or has any information about the incident should contact Queenstown police on (03) 441-1600.
