Wanaka's new $21.5 million primary school is well on track to opening its doors to pupils next September.

Wanaka Primary School Board of Trustees chairman Pete Bullen said construction of the new facility at Scurr Heights was proceeding "tentatively" ahead of schedule.

"It's going really well and the buildings are looking impressive," he said.

There had been many decisions for the school's management and board of trustees to make as construction of the new facility proceeded.

"It's like the biggest house you've ever built. You have all those decisions about interior colours, exterior cladding, and all the designs. It's been a busy time," he said.

School trustees and staff had also been working alongside transport representatives from the Queenstown Lakes District Council to finish plans for roading, walking, and cycling tracks to and from the new facility, Mr Bullen said.

"It has been great having a clean template to design all of those things you want for a school."

Playing fields were now being sown at the school site, which is north of Wanaka's Mount Aspiring College and accessed from Totara Tce and Ironside Dr.

It was expected the new school would open in 12 months, after a changeover from the existing overcrowded Wanaka Primary School on Tenby St.
