New mountain bike trail signs have been installed at the gateways to the Seven Mile Recreation Reserve, capping more than two years of dedicated development by a group of Wakatipu enthusiasts.

Queenstown Mountain Bike Club president Lance Brown said the club produced a trail map, "but the area really needed some signage in recognition of the relationships of Wakatipu organisations who contributed to the development of the area.

"If people don't have a map, they can look at the signage and get a sense of the trails.

"Some of them are quite short and loop back on each other, and understanding the way the trails are graded for different levels of ability is important to relay."

The signs at Seven Mile car park and Wilson Bay lay out the complex network of 11 trails and pinpoint bridges and waterways.

The signs illustrate which trails are multiuse and which are for walking only.

Safety advice and trail care notices are also posted, along with telephone numbers for the 111 emergency service, non-emergency ambulance calls, Queenstown police and Doc.

The signs acknowledge the grants and assistance in developing the park from the Department of Conservation, Central Lakes Trust, Outside Sports, Community Trust of Southland, Vivian and Espie, Phatlines and the Wakatipu Trails Trust, which paid for the $1200 signs.

Chief executive Renee Bowman said the trust and most of the Seven Mile partners were now developing mountain bike recreation reserves near Gorge Rd and Jardine Park in Kelvin Heights, to open next year.

"The key thing for us is we want to work with as many community groups as possible to promote the safe use of walking and cycling trails."
