Bad break for German tramper

A German tramper had to be airlifted from the Greenstone track near Queenstown yesterday after breaking a leg.

Sergeant Keith Newell, of Queenstown, said the 26-year-old tourist tripped and broke the tibia and fibula of one leg near the Rats Nest Hut, about 20km southwest of Glenorchy.

The man managed to walk another 200 metres before realising he could not go on.

Another tramper came across him and activated a personal locator beacon, prompting the National Rescue Coordination Centre to arrange evacuation by helicopter to Lakes District Hospital in Frankton.
