Back on the job: shifted staff return

A giant crane and a handful of workers were back in action at Queenstown's $2 billion Five Mile Village development yesterday.

Five Mile developer Dave Henderson contacted the Otago Daily Times yesterday to say four workers would be at the site, using a 200-tonne crane to lift concrete panels into place as part of construction of a basement car park.

Four workers were at the site when the ODT visited at 1.30pm, including two using the crane to creep a giant 50-tonne slab of concrete across the work pit.

Mr Henderson said he had requested daily telephone calls from his two contractors - Smith Crane and Construction and March Construction - to brief him on how many workers were on site each day.

The measures follow reports that about 20 workers had been shifted from the site to other construction projects around the resort because delays at Five Mile were leaving them with little to do.

The ODT understands delays are expected to continue for up to a month, although Mr Henderson said he did not know when full-scale construction would resume.

He said he remained happy with the performance of contractors at the site.
