Award 'wake-up call' to Key

Dart River Jet Safaris' newly awarded Green Globe bronze benchmark status should be a "wake-up call" to Minister of Tourism John Key, Labour tourism spokeswoman Nanaia Mahuta says.

The fact a Queenstown adventure-tourism operator had achieved international recognition for its effort towards sustainability "really flies in the face of the National-led Government's lack of leadership on climate change and should be a wake up call to the Minister of Tourism, Rt Hon John Key," Ms Mahuta said.

"Tourism operators deserve greater support in their sustainability effort."

Ms Mahuta said it was great to see New Zealand tourism operators leading the country's 100%-pure profile.

The award was part of an internationally recognised certification system, and supported businesses to reduce their environmental impact and contribute to sustainable practices.

Dart River Jet Safaris achieved best-practice results in wastes sent to landfill, recycling and community commitment.

"New Zealand tourism operators are keenly aware that, as a long-haul destination, our clean and green image is much sought-after and they will need to deliver on that expectation.

"More importantly, not only is it good for business prospects . . . it's good for the environment as well," Ms Mahuta said.

Dart River Jet Safaris business unit manager Andy Chapman said the bronze benchmark was a sensible move for the business and the first step to achieving silver and gold status.

"From a business perspective, getting on board Green Globe will assist our profitability and assist us [in meeting] visitor expectations," he said.
