Nine people were briefly interviewed about their performing experience then invited to sing songs of their choice to their musical accompaniment.
Director Margaret O'Hanlan, producer Martin Grounds and production manager Nicki Viggers, all of Queenstown-based Underground Productions, held auditions for a dozen roles in Rock 'n' Roll Suicide.
The adult rock-opera charts the rise and fall of a young man who goes to London in 1969 to become a rock star.
The musical will be performed entirely by the cast singing 24 classic Bowie songs played live by a six-piece Wakatipu band.
Ms O'Hanlan hoped more advertising and word of mouth would encourage performers to contact her directly.
"We got some outstanding people and we snapped them up. We definitely need more singers and dancers."
"The standard was exceptionally high. There wasn't anybody who wasn't capable, but I need a balance between men and women. We needed more men."
Rock 'n' Roll Suicide will be staged from October 28 to 30.
Ms O'Hanlan said interested people should text her on 027 422-1768.
