Assaults fuelled by alcohol

Queenstown police last week arrested and charged two Australians and one French-Canadian in relation to three incidents in the resort, all involving alcohol.

Sergeant Brian Cameron, of Queenstown, said a 22-year-old Australian tourist was arrested on Monday night in relation to an assault at the World Bar on Shotover St earlier in the day.

"Two groups of Australians were in the World Bar and two of the group - one from each side - got into a verbal."

The 22-year-old threw a punch.

The situation then escalated and ended with a 24-year-old man allegedly smashing a glass into the face of a 23-year-old man, Sgt Cameron said.

The victim was taken to Lakes District Hospital where he received stitches for serious lacerations to his face.

The 24-year-old was arrested and charged with wounding with intent and the 22-year-old was charged with assault.

Police were still seeking witnesses to the incident, which occurred at 1am on Monday.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Queenstown police on 03 441-1600.

Sgt Cameron said a second Australian was arrested at 2.15am on Tuesday for disorderly behaviour after "getting into a struggle" with door staff at Base Backpackers on Shotover St.

"Alcohol was a factor, as it was in the previous incident."

The 23-year-old will appear in the Queenstown District Court next Monday.

Sgt Cameron said the third arrest was in relation to "an all-in fight" on Camp St, outside the ASB Bank on August 5.

"At about 5am three males were assaulted.

One of them had been kicked unconscious by the look of it."

A 25-year-old French-Canadian tourist was arrested in relation to the incident and charged with assaulting with intent to injure.
