The land of song meets the land of the long white cloud when members of the North American Welsh Choir raise their voices in a Queenstown church next month.

The community choir, also known as Côr Cymry Gogledd America, was founded by mezzo soprano Mari Morgan, of New York, in 1998 and reaches its cross-continental choristers via the internet.

The 35-member touring choir features choristers who live in 25 American states and three Canadian provinces.

They include descendants of Welsh immigrants, expatriates and individuals who feel connected with the music and the community.

The choir has announced a four-date New Zealand tour and its concert in St Peter's Anglican Church will be the finale, on Saturday, November 5, at 7.30pm.

The Rt Rev Dr David Coles, Vicar of Wakatipu Anglican parish, said the choir approached the church about a venue and it was interesting timing, given how strongly Wales performed in the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

"There are many famous hymns from Wales and there are a few Welsh parishioners who will be there in force, I imagine," Dr Coles said.

The tour repertoire includes folk songs Ar Hyd y Nos and Suo Gân, with sacred songs including Benedictus and Rwy'n dy weld yn sefyll, plus popular songs such as A Gwnaeth y Sêr and Hafan Gobaith, not forgetting the national anthems of both Wales, Mae Hen Wlad fy Nhadau, and the host country, God Defend New Zealand.
