Remarkable Theatre members (from left) producer David Cantwell, performers Michel Hewitt, Ruth Joiner and Jane Robertson with director Tanya Surrey, practise at the waterfront yesterday before their first play reading performance for the public on Sunday.

The troupe presents a free performance of The Birthday Boy in SkyCity Queenstown Casino at 7pm.

A pair of middle-class and middle-aged couples celebrate a milestone birthday, but they are not prepared for an announcement which changes their lives and their friendships. Ms Surrey, directing her fourth play reading, said the 2008 play by Carl Nixon was ''a witty and poignant piece of New Zealand theatre, looking at the realities of everyday life''.

Remarkable Theatre presents a new play reading in the casino on the first Sunday evening of each month.
